AL-100 Aluminum Alloy Passivator

Aluminum conversion chemistry built around trivalent chromium passivation, which leaves a trivalent chromium conversion coating on aluminum and its alloys.

What AL-100 Does on Aluminum

Fengfan AL-100 Aluminum Alloy Trivalent Chromium Passivator is a concentrated passivator for aluminum and aluminum alloys. It is diluted with deionized water and reacts with a clean aluminum surface to form a clear aluminum conversion coating in seconds to a few minutes, depending on line operation. Nothing is electrodeposited: the film grows out of the metal itself and follows the profile of the part rather than sitting on top.

The product replaces the step commonly known as an “alodine coating.” Its trivalent chromium chemistry contains no hexavalent chromium. It is not an anodized coating; it forms by chemical reaction, not electrolytically, and leaves the surface looking like aluminum rather than coated aluminum. It can be run immediately before paint, powder coating, or adhesive bonding, or as the last tank of the day.

AL-100 can be applied at the end of an aluminum anodizing process or as a stand-alone tank on bare extrusion and castings. It is kept as a separate tank from an anodizing line because the two processes do not share chemistry.

Specification: Working Bath Ranges

These are the published working ranges for the AL-100 bath. Start at the standard figure rather than the top of the range.

Concentration, immersion 100–500 ml/L
Temperature 30–40 °C
pH 3.7–3.95

Spray pressure 0.5–1.5 bar
Stirring Not necessary
Bath material Stainless steel, or steel with an acid- and fluoride-resistant lining
Filtration As required, at least 2 bath turnovers per hour
Heating As required, with acid- and fluoride-resistant heating equipment
Cooling Not necessary
Exhaust Recommended, for worker health

Standard Start-Up Values

  • Spray concentration: 250 ml/L
  • Immersion concentration: 200 ml/L
  • pH: 3.9, checked with a meter rather than by colour
  • Spray pressure: 1 bar

Bath Preparation and Control

  • Dilute with deionized water before use and clean equipment thoroughly beforehand.
  • For new tanks or lines, clean with 10% sulfuric acid solution, then rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Add measured AL-100 plus deionized water, stir until evenly mixed, measure pH and adjust to 3.9.
  • To lower pH, use 5% sulfuric acid solution; to raise pH, use 1% sodium hydroxide solution. Add in small increments and re-check.
  • Use deionized water rather than tap water.
  • Start at the standard figure, not the top of the range. The 100–500 ml/L band is the working range as drag-out and ageing reduce concentration.
  • Confirm the standard against a panel from your own line before the first production batch.

Decision Guide: Immersion or Spray

AL-100 supports both routes with the same drum, so a shop can start on immersion and add spray later without changing chemistry.

Immersion Route

Immersion is the standard route. Alkaline degreasing is used for immersion work and for high-silicon castings. No agitation or stirring is needed in the bath; parts can hang still on the rack.

Spray Route

Spray is an alternative for parts that are awkward to dip, including long extrusions, wide panels, and bulky assemblies on a conveyor. No bath agitation is needed; a reservoir, pump, and nozzle set are sufficient. Short spray contact times fit inside a paint or powder line without slowing it.

Substrate and Pretreatment Decision

Use alkaline degreasing for immersion work and high-silicon castings. Use acidic degreasing on a spray line. High-silicon alloys—most die-cast and many foundry grades—take the alkaline route rather than acidic preparation.

Need to match the route to your tank, rack, or conveyor line?

Use Cases in Aluminum Production

AL-100 is used where a clear chemical film must support a following coating or leave the part ready for the next step.

  • Run AL-100 immediately before paint, powder coating, or adhesive bonding, or as the last tank of the day.
  • Apply at the end of an aluminum anodizing process, or as a stand-alone tank on bare extrusion and castings.
  • Use the alkaline route for high-silicon alloys, including most die-cast and many foundry grades.
  • Use spray for long extrusions, wide panels, and bulky assemblies that are awkward to dip.
  • Where an alodine tank is already installed, the tank, rack, and rinse stations stay; only bath chemistry and control range change.
  • Leave the part 24 hours after passivation to support reliable adhesion for a subsequent coating.

Verification: Process Sequence and First Batch

The published sequence is simple: Degrease → Rinse → Passivate → Rinse and dry → Coat or leave.

  1. 1Degrease. Use alkaline degreasing for immersion work and high-silicon castings; use acidic degreasing on a spray line.
  2. 2Rinse the part before passivation.
  3. 3Passivate in the AL-100 bath using the concentration, temperature, pH, and time that match the route and treatment goal.
  4. 4Rinse and dry the part.
  5. 5Coat the part, or leave it after passivation as the final tank step.

Checks Before Production

  • Dilute with deionized water before use; clean equipment thoroughly beforehand.
  • For new tanks or lines, clean with 10% sulfuric acid solution, then rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Add measured AL-100 plus deionized water, stir until evenly mixed, measure pH and adjust to 3.9.
  • Adjust pH with small increments of 5% sulfuric acid solution to lower it, or 1% sodium hydroxide solution to raise it, then re-check.
  • Use deionized water rather than tap water.
  • Start at the standard figure, not the top of the range. Drag-out and ageing reduce concentration within the 100–500 ml/L working band.
  • Confirm the standard against a panel from your own line before the first production batch.
